IN MEMORIUM-RETIRED SERGEANT RAYMOND LEDWARD

Raymond W. "Ray" Ledward Jr. (74) of Union Dale, PA., formerly of West Caldwell, died Saturday December 30, 2017, at home. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Donna. He was a loving husband and a proud father and grandfather. He was a graduate of James Caldwell High School, Class of 1961. He attended the Teterboro School of Aeronautics and continued his training in the United States Air Force.

After his service, he continued his education, earning an Associate of Science Degree from the County College of Morris, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in public safety and triple master of arts in criminal research and planning, community affairs, and urban and education, all from William Paterson University.

He served in the United States Air Force, enlisting in 1964 and trained in the aircraft mechanics field. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he earned several medals, including the Presidential Unit Citation and Presidential Personal Citation, each with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Good Conduct and Vietnam Medal and a Bronze Star. He served in the Army National Guard at the Picatinny Arsenal from 1989-1991.

Sergeant Ledawrd retired in 1994 from the Fairfield Police Department after 26 years. He served as a patrol officer and a detective and greatly enjoyed being the head of the firearms unit for 14 years. The department's old firearms range, located behind police headquarters, was affectionately known as "Fort Ledward"

He received two citations for valor in the line of duty in addition to numerous awards. He was known for speaking his mind and enjoyed serving alongside his fellow officers. In honor of his service, all Fairfield officers will be wearing mourning bands over their badges for the next 30 days.
