Fairfield Police Officers Participate in Day of Charity

On September 30, 2017, many officers from the police department participated in two separate charitable events. The first of these events was the annual Special Olympics Plane Pull held at Newark Airport. “Fairfield’s Finest” raised $11,720 for the cause which helps to support the Special Olympics activities throughout the state. Over the last 15 years, the Fairfield Police Department has raised approximately $86,000. “We could not even come close to this amount if not for our generous donors and supporters” said Detective Robert Sanger, the department’s Special Olympics coordinator and the Plane Pull’s team captain. The final results relative to the fastest pull time and the lightest combined weight pull time have not yet been published by Special Olympics.

Later that same day, the second annual “Battle of the Badges” charity softball game between the police and fire departments took place at the Fairfield recreation complex. As was the case last year, the police team defeated the fire team by a score of 14-9. This year, the game was played to benefit one of the children of retired Fairfield Police Corporal David Kane who is afflicted with autism and who will greatly benefit by the acquisition of a service dog, the cost of which is very expensive. “This softball game is truly a great event in that it brings our police officers and firefighters closer together in a friendly competition. But even more importantly, it allows to raise money for various causes that both the police and fire departments care about” said Chief Anthony G. Manna. A final total of money received has not yet been tabulated as more donations continue to come in. Anyone interested in donating can do so by sending it to the Fairfield Fire Department with a note that it is for the Battle of the Badges.
