Stolen Temp Tag Leads to Arrest

Fairfield (NJ) The Fairfield Police Department announces the arrest of Fernando Vargas-Mendoza (34) of Kearny, N.J., for receiving stolen property on February 10, 2018. On that date, at approximately 5:03 P.M., Officer David Lagan was on patrol on Route 46 East when he observed a black Cadillac Escalade also travelling east allegedly with an inoperable taillight. The officer also observed that the expiration date of the vehicle’s temporary registration was obscured by a license plate frame. The officer then conducted a computer check of the plate which allegedly revealed that it was stolen.

The vehicle was then stopped and found to be operated by Vargas-Mendoza who was placed under arrest without incident. He was transported to police headquarters and the vehicle was impounded. Further investigation revealed that the Cadillac was not a stolen vehicle and that Vargas-Mendoza allegedly knew the temporary tag was not obtained legally.

While processing Vargas-Mendoza at police headquarters, it was discovered that he was allegedly not in the United States legally and that he was currently under removal proceedings from Immigration Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) In addition to the criminal charge, he was also charged with being an unlicensed and suspended driver, having fictitious plates and having an unregistered and uninsured vehicle. He was turned over to the custody of I.C.E. agents.

(It should be noted that the charges against Vargas-Mendoza are merely allegations and that he is presumed innocent until he either pleads guilty or is found guilty in a court of law)
