Lieutenant Michael Nyhuis

Investigative Section Commander

Lieutenant Michael Nyhuis is a graduate of Rutgers University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Administration of Justice.  He is also a graduate of Seton Hall University where he obtained a master’s degree in human resources training and development.  He joined the Fairfield Police Department on January 14th, 2002, and is a graduate of the Morris County Police Academy.

Lieutenant Nyhuis was assigned to the Patrol Section from 2002 to 2011.  During his time in the Patrol Section he was an EMT assigned to the Emergency Services Unit, a firearms instructor and member of the traffic unit.  In 2011 he was assigned to the Investigative Section where he became the juvenile detective and evidence custodian.

In 2017, he was promoted to sergeant as a patrol squad supervisor and then reassigned as a sergeant in the Investigative Section.  He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 2021 and assigned as Investigative Section Commander.  Lt. Nyhuis is still an active EMT and now the officer in charge of the firearms unit.  He is also an active member of the Emergency Response Team.

Investigative Section

​

The Fairfield Police Department's Investigative Section is located within the Special Services Division and is responsible for conducting follow up investigations on criminal matters that have been reported. They also generate their own self-initiated criminal investigations. This section is responsible for conducting a variety of background investigations that include firearms licensing, liquor license applications, employment applicant investigations. They are also responsible for oversight of the department’s enforcement in the area of narcotics, vice, human trafficking, ABC investigations, Megan’s Law, and juvenile aid.
