Fairfield (NJ) The Fairfield Police Department announces the arrest of Sadiq Dias (23) of East Orange, N.J. for burglary, hindering apprehension and possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana on May 19, 2020.
On that date, at approximately 5:06 PM, officers were dispatched to the area of 1 Gardner Road on a report of an African American male who was allegedly pulling on car door handles and who also was observed entering a black 2008 Lexus. It is alleged that a witness to the incident yelled at the male who then fled on foot towards Route 46.
Responding police units began to search the area. It was at this time that Detective Sergeant Jeffrey Didyk and Officer Frank Patierno observed Dias, who matched the suspect’s description, run across Route 46 towards the BP gas station. The officers stopped him and it is alleged that they immediately detected a pungent odor of burnt marijuana coming from his clothing. Further investigation revealed the alleged discovery of a small plastic bag containing suspected marijuana and a half consumed “blunt” cigar. Dias was placed under arrest. It is further alleged that Dias initially identified himself to the officers using a fake name and date of birth. His actual name was discovered through further investigation. It is alleged that Dias was positively identified by the witness to the incident as the individual who was seen inside of the Lexus.
He was transported to headquarters where he was processed, charged and released on his own recognizance pending an appearance in the Superior Court on June 23, 2020.
(It should be noted that the charges against Dias are merely allegations and that he is presumed innocent until he either pleads guilty or is found guilty in a court of law)
