Rhode Island Resident Arrested for Driving While Intoxicated

Fairfield NJ – The Fairfield Police Department announces the arrest of Marc Buontempo (40), of East Greenwich, RI for driving while intoxicated on July 10, 2023. On that date at approximately 10:32 pm, Officer Jayson Sickles was travelling on Route 46 West when a Black Tesla allegedly failed to stop at the stop sign coming from the Gately Overpass onto Route 46 West. The vehicle entered the highway directly in front of the officer’s vehicle at which time officer Sickles had to abruptly apply his brakes to avoid a collision. Officer Sickles conducted a motor vehicle stop for the motor vehicle violations.

While speaking with the driver, Buontempo, who was the only occupant in the vehicle, officer Sickles allegedly observed signs and symptoms consistent with someone who may be under the influence. This included watery eyes, slurred speech, handing the officer incorrect documents as well as the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the vehicle.

Based on the totality of the circumstances, field sobriety testing was conducted, and Buontempo was subsequently placed under arrest for driving while intoxicated. The vehicle was impounded per New Jersey law. Buontempo was transported to headquarters for processing. It is alleged that Buontempo refused to provide breath samples for testing purposes, which is required in the State of New Jersey. In addition to driving while intoxicated, Buontempo was also charged with refusal to submit to breath testing, disregarding a stop sign, careless driving, reckless driving and delaying traffic. Buontempo

was later released pending an initial appearance at the Fairfield Municipal Court on July 20, 2023.
