Wayne Resident Arrested for DWI After Motor Vehicle Crash

Fairfield (NJ) The Fairfield Police Department announces the arrest of Richard Mueller (68), of Wayne, NJ for driving while under the influence and assault by auto following a motor vehicle crash on April 1, 2023. On that date at approximately 10:40 pm, Corporal James High was dispatched to Route 46 East near #420 for a two-car motor vehicle crash. Upon his arrival he located both vehicles disabled. After speaking with the occupants of both vehicles, Corporal High observed Mueller’s actions to be consistent with someone under the influence to include slurred speech, the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from his breath as well as bloodshot, watery eyes. Mueller was placed under arrest at this time for Driving While Intoxicated. His vehicle was impounded pursuant to NJ Law.

Due to an injury suffered in the crash, Mueller was first transported to the hospital for medical care. Upon his discharge, he was escorted to police headquarters for processing. While at headquarters, it is alleged he provided samples of his breath for testing purposes and found to be double the legal limit, several hours after the crash had occurred.

In addition to being charged with DWI and assault by auto, Mueller was issued several motor vehicle summonses. He was later released pending a May 25, 2023 appearance at the Essex County Superior Court.

(It should be noted that the charges are merely allegations and that there is a presumption of innocence until Mueller either pleads guilty or is found guilty in a court of law)

Issued by: Officer Stacy Chiarolanza (PIO)
